2017 Governor General’s Innovation Award Winners
OTTAWA—The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 Governor General’s
Ontario
Dr. Radisic invented Biowire heart-on-a-chip, a game-changer in drug testing and disease modelling. Traditional testing relies on animal models which cannot capture human genetic diversity & sex specificity. Using electrical stimulation and microfabrication of elastomeric polymers, Dr. Radisic developed methods to grow and mature contractile heart tissues starting from human stem cells, modeling heart disease of patients in Canada and enabling drug discovery for major pharma companies.
Dr. Radisic is a Professor at the University of Toronto, a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Organ-on-a-Chip Engineering and a Senior Scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute. She is also Director of the NSERC CREATE Training Program in Organ-on-a-Chip Engineering &Entrepreneurship and a co-founder of the Center for Research and Applications in Fluidic Technologies. She is a Fellow of 7 Academies, including the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Inventors and the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering. Her research focuses on organ-on-a-chip engineering and development of new biomaterials that promote healing and attenuate scarring. Her work produced >260 publications in Cell, Nature Materials, Nature Methods, PNAS etc., with >24,000 citations and an h-index of 77. For this work, she won 47 awards, including the MIT Technology Review Top 35 Under 35, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, YWCA Woman of Distinction Award, Killam Fellowship, Steacie Prize, Germany’s Humboldt Research Award and NSERC Polanyi Prize. She served on Boards of Directors for the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, Canadian Biomaterials Society and McMaster University Alumni Association. She is a Scientific Officer for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. She is the Chair of the Investment Committee for Serbia Innovation Fund. She is a co-founder of two companies: TARA Biosystems acquired by Valo Health which uses human hearts-on-a-chip in drug development and safety testing, and Quthero which advances regenerative peptide-materials.
